York’s rich history, from Roman times to the present day, is being celebrated in a free app which will take you on a tour of the city, encountering some of York’s most famous characters hidden around the historic streets.

Aimed at families, you’ll meet Anne Lister, Dick Turpin and Guy Fawkes among the cast of iconic York characters. Each one has an interactive augmented reality element, bringing history to life in front of your eyes! There are eight characters to find in all.

The York BID are launching the ‘Travel Through Time’ quest on 15th January. The York Quest app is free to use and is available on Google Play Store or App Store.

In addition to the ‘Travel Through Time’ quest, there are fresh seasonal quests throughout the year, such as the ‘Santa Search’ Christmas quest and ‘Buzz About York’ summer quest.

Once you have found a character, you can interact with them and share a photo on social media.

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at the BID said, “We hope this app will appeal to both residents and visitors, giving an added element of fun to their visit into the city centre. You might choose to do the whole quest, or just discover a couple of characters as you visit other places in the city. It’s ideal for keeping younger members of the family entertained on a day out!”

In a special competition running during Residents Festival (29-30 January) you could win a £150 York Gift Card with the new Travel Through Time Quest!

If you complete the new quest this Residents Festival weekend, you could win a £150 York Gift Card to spend at over 300 local businesses. Simply take a screenshot of your completed trail and share it with the York BID on Instagram, tagging @the_york_bid, or email your image to info@theyorkbid.com

Deadline for entries: 5pm Monday 31st January. A winner will be drawn at random and notified on Tuesday 1st February. Good luck!
