Broughton bellringer Steve Waterworth completed his sponsored 140 mile cycle around 27 of the region’s most beautiful churches and then celebrated by ringing the bells at his local church.
Steve of Moor Lane, Broughton, rings at St Peter’s Church, Norton, and his efforts have raised more than £800 for the Bell Repair Fund, which provides financial support for towers needing repairs, to improve ringing or even bring ringing back to silent towers
As he finished his ride on Sunday, friends were there to welcome him, and then Steve still had the energy to join a group of bellringing colleagues from other local churches to ring a complex and tiring 45 minute quarter peal!
Steve’s marathon ride started at Bridlington Priory on Friday 2 September and over three days, visited churches as far North as Robin Hoods Bay, as far West as Helmsley and as far South as Bossall, before returning to Norton.
Steve explained. “It was a real challenge, but I was supported along the way by friends across the bellringing community. At a number of churches I visited, bellringers were there to greet me, at Scalby they rang for me as I left, and at Brompton, they even provided lunch!
“Then at the end, a group for ringers from across the region joined me in a quarter peal - and I’m not sure which was harder - riding 140 miles or ringing !!
