With a heatwave forecast for the first week of September, tennis fans in York will be looking to take advantage of some late summer sunshine to get out on the court.

To investigate the state of tennis across the UK sports equipment retailer Net World Sports has launched their Game, Set & Match report.

The study analyses 30 cities across the UK, exploring the cost of hiring a court during peak times, and the quantity & quality of facilities.

Key Findings:

  • York ranks second with 19.7 tennis courts per 100,000 residents finishing behind Cambridge  33.6 courts.
  • The cost to hire a tennis court in York is £10.40 per hour, which places it as the 12th most expensive city in the country for tennis.
  • The UK average comes in at £9.41, rising by 7% over the last five years.
  • The average Google review score for tennis courts in York is 4.6/5, indicating high-quality playing facilities.

Edinburgh tops the charts as the UK’s most expensive city to play tennis, costing over £16 for an hour during peak time on a weekend. But with the high price comes quality and plenty of opportunities to play, highlighted by the city’s average Google rating of 4.5 and just over 10 courts per 100k people.

Chelmsford ranks as the most expensive city in England, with an average cost of £15.50 per hour, but again offers several great courts with 26 within the vicinity of the city.

Moving further north, Salford is the lowest-priced city to play tennis in the UK, costing just £4 during peak times – this is more than £12 less than Edinburgh.

Courts within the city have been recently refurbished through a partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Salford City Council, with some courts available free of charge throughout the week.

Costing £5 for an hour's play, Bristol is the second most affordable city to play tennis. The city has consistently had low prices, with the same service costing just £4.55 five years ago and it also offers great facilities, with an average Google rating of 4.6.
