25 Apr 2024 Reminder: Second Queen Street Bridge closure to take place this weekend

City of York Council is reminding residents and visitors that a second road closure will take place this weekend as part of the Station Gateway project.

This follows the first closure which took place last weekend and saw the creation of the new temporary diversion road.

Queen Street Bridge, the new temporary road and the station car park will be closed to all users this weekend from 8pm Friday 26 April until 6am Monday 29 April.

This second closure will allow for the gradual removal of the bridge, which will improve the setting of the city walls and free up the space needed to transform the area to the front of the railway station. From Monday, the temporary diversion road will then continue to be used by pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles as the project continues.

Diversions will be in place over the weekend, but York remains very much open for business. Buses will continue to operate throughout the closure, but some routes will change around the station. This will include the temporary relocation of some bus stops. Information on bus diversions can be found at: www.itravelyork.info/bus-route-diversions

There will also be free shuttle buses running between Blossom Street and the station during the closure. The shuttle buses will run regularly and will stop at a number of bus stops along the route.

The station and nearby businesses will remain open. Residents and visitors are being asked to please plan ahead if travelling in the area and, if possible, consider other ways to travel during these closures.

Councillor Pete Kilbane, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Transport and Economy, said

“I would like to thank everybody who was able to leave the car at home last weekend. You helped keep York moving. It was great to see the city centre busy and we ask everyone to repeat that success and come into town this weekend by walking, wheeling, cycling or getting the bus if you can. It is really important that we continue to support our fantastic local businesses throughout the works, especially with the York RI hosting the Big York Flea market and all the other events that are happening.

“Good progress has been made so far with the project and we continue to work with partners, reviewing the first closure and preparing for the second. This includes encouraging people to use the free shuttle bus that will run from Blossom Street to the train station.

“I once again thank everybody for their patience and understanding as we get on with improving the area. This weekend will see another significant milestone for the Station Gateway project as the most noticeable part of the removal of the Queen St Bridge begins.”
