Art take over at the Barbican

Children from 11 years old in York are taking over the Barbican today to show off their art and drama work from the last year.

Over the last year, children in York have been working alongside industry professionals to create their own projects at school. Sustainable jewellery artist Louise Dwyer has been helping children from St George's Primary make their own animal-themed jewellery. Grand Opera House's Kelly Culver and Mud Pie Arts have accompanied children at Burton Green Primary to make environment-themed art and drama.

The initiative has been coordinated by REACH, York's cultural education partner; they have used funding from the Arts Council and the City of York Council to deliver these opportunities to children. The showcase at the Barbican begins at 16.45 today.

REACH chair Chris Edwards commented on the importance of giving children the opportunity to engage with art: “There’s evidence to show that if you don’t start accessing it in early years, you will never get access to it,” he said.
