Castle Howard in North Yorkshire is rewilding 440 acres of low-yield farmland as part of a biodiversity initiative.
Partnering with Environment Bank, the estate has created a habitat bank where organisations can purchase "nature credits" to offset carbon footprints or meet biodiversity targets.
The scheme is expected to boost bats, bees, butterflies, and turtle doves, with beaver reintroduction considered. Managed grazing will maintain open scrubland.
Estate chief Jasper Hasell emphasised collaboration with local groups.
The project aims to combat biodiversity loss, aligning with England’s biodiversity net gain requirements and creating a lasting environmental legacy.
