Construction has started on the UK’s first all-electric prison at Full Sutton near York.
The prison is due to open in 2025 and is projected to house almost 1,500 prisoners. It is also thought that more than 600 jobs will be created.
The prison will use solar panels and heat pump technology to ensure it runs solely on electricity. In comparison to traditional prisons such as HMP Wormwood Scrubs, the prison will use 78% less energy.
The venture will cost taxpayers £1.1 million less a year.
