Firefighters from York, Huntington and Acomb were called to the fire on Barkston Close at 10:23pm last Thursday.
The cause of the fire is thought to have been a frying pan left unattended.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus during their successful rescue of the man, who was in his 60s.
The man was given a check-up by paramedics on the scene as a precaution, but is doing well.
