The future of major stores in the York city centre is uncertain, due to a proposed regeneration project as part of the Helmsley Group’s proposals for Coney Street. A section of the Boots building is earmarked for demolition, Boots however has stated that it remains committed to a presence in the centre.
Helmsley also seeks to ‘remodel’ the storefront of the Next building and add a brand new building on 29-31 Coney Street, currently containing the pop-up Street life exhibition. Max Reeves, development director at Helmsley Group, said: “Helmsley Group has worked closely with the retailers on Coney Street around our proposed Coney Street Riverside scheme, and will continue to do so should planning be approved.
