Last week many residents safely celebrated bonfire night. However, St Peter’s School did clarify that it did not burn an effigy of former pupil Guy Fawkes.

Born in York in 1570, Guy Fawkes became infamous for plotting to blow up Parliament and kill King James I in 1605.

419 years later, the former school of the plotter, St Peter’s School in York, did celebrate the annual Bonfire Night but did not follow the tradition of burning an effigy of Fawkes.

Head Jeremy Walker explained to the BBC that “we have fireworks at the school… but what we won’t be doing is having a bonfire and burning an effigy of one of our former pupils on top of it”
