The future of the Grade I listed ‘King’s Manor’ in York University’s Heslington Campus could be left uncertain after the University revealed it is pulling out of its lease.
The now former home of the Department of Archaeology and the Centre for Medieval Studies has been leased by the University since 1963, 480 years after its construction.
The university cited substantial running costs, accessibility concerns and inability to reconfigure the building to fit modern academic use as reasons for pulling out of the lease deal with the council.
The university is set to leave the site by September 2025, with plans for the Council to work with heritage organisations to conserve the historic space.
