Knife drop bins are to be installed in York and North Yorkshire as part of a national crack down on crime.

Knife drop bins are to be installed in York and North Yorkshire as part of a national crack down on crime.

The initiative follows a successful pilot scheme by former Harrogate Borough council. In which a knife bin was placed at the Dragon Road car park and since January over 500 knives have been deposited.

North Yorkshire Council has commited to expanding this scheme, in partnership with North Yorkshire Polica and City of York Council. Due to this over £15,000 in funding has been awarded to North Yorkshire Council to install the knife bins.

While North Yorkshire is generally regarded as a safe county, knife crime, as with most places in England remains an issue. The record number of fatal stabbings in England and Wales is reported to be at its highest level since records began over seventy-five years ago.

Once locations for the bins have been decided the public will be able to deposit the knife into the bin through a hatch. People are advised to wrap the blade in paper or cardboard for safety.

The bins will then be emptied by officers to be disposed of by North Yorkshire police.
