Ad Astra building ablaze overnight
The emergency services were called to a fire at Elvington Industrial Estate at around four forty five yesterday morning, with the blaze not put out until four thirty in the afternoon. An aerial platform had to be used to put out the flames as local residents were told to keep doors and windows shut from smoke; according to a witness ‘the building doesn’t exist anymore’.
The building was home to Ad Astra, an alternative education centre allowing vulnerable young people to complete vocational qualifications and functional skills. Stakeholders are offering support to the centre who currently help up to forty people between the ages of eleven and twenty one to access these programmes.
