Thursday, 19 September 2024 09:48

By Barbara Constable

The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Margaret Wells, will be the first visitor to York Food Festival’s "Food Factory," the Festival’s hands-on cookery attraction located in York’s Museum Gardens.

The Civic Party will officially open the Festival’s largest venue at 2pm on Friday, 20th September. Following the opening, Cllr Wells and the Civic Party will participate in some of the activities designed for both curious adults and children, including bread, butter, and pasta making, an introduction to cheese making, and demonstrations of salting and smoking fish, along with preparing a range of vegan dips.

The Food Factory is a free attraction provided by the Festival, a not-for-profit organization, funded largely by the income generated from the Festival markets in York’s Parliament Street.

The Food Factory will be open daily during the Festival until 29th September. Operating hours are from 10am, with last entry at 3pm on weekends. During the week, public access is available with a daily session at 3pm, as the mornings are dedicated to primary school groups from across the city. For the first time, there will also be sessions for Scouts and Guides in the late afternoon and early evening. In total, over 1,000 children are expected to participate, with a similar capacity for adult and family groups. No pre-booking is required—just turn up and join in!
