York’s famous egg thrower has been arrested on suspicion of breaching the peace at the coronation after pummelling the new King back in April during his short visit to York.

Patrick Thelwell, joined the anti-monarchy protest group Republic in Trafalgar Square during the coronation despite his attendance being banned by the Metropolitan Police.

In a statement on Twitter, the 23-year-old said: "I was identified by facial recognition cameras and snatched from the protest in handcuffs so tight they cut my skin. I was dragged through a crowd of monarchists baying for my blood."

Thelwell was released by the Metropolitan police after half an hour of searching.
