York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith is running 5km every day in November to raise awareness for Menfulness, a men’s mental health charity.

November marks six months since David Skaith took up office. Throughout that time, one of his key priorities is the need to create healthy and thriving communities across York and North Yorkshire. Menfulness is a great example of a charity working towards that aim. It is a men’s social wellbeing group, providing activities and breaking down barriers to counselling for men in York and surrounding areas, one example of their work is a running club.

David Skaith said: “I have experienced my own mental health journey, I know that for me it’s important to keep active and keep talking. That’s why charities like Menfulness are so important. They provide a safe space to have those honest conversations and to be active with others.”

“In the UK, 13 men lose their life every day due to poor mental health, and that is a statistic that needs to change. We need to come together as a community and support one another to tackle loneliness, isolation and to encourage people to be open about what they are going through.”

“Places like Menfulness mean that we can do that. I’m excited to take on this challenge and hopefully encourage more men to talk about their mental health.”

Recognising that being outdoors can help promote and maintain good mental and physical health, and as part of his focus on building healthy and thriving communities, the mayor has plans to improve access to the outdoors and break down barriers to participating in sports and activity across York and North Yorkshire.

Jack Woodhams, founder of Menfulness said: “David’s support and friendship to Menfulness has been incredible. Mental health doesn’t discriminate; it can affect anyone. We hope David’s efforts show that if our new Mayor can openly acknowledge his need for support, others will feel inspired to seek help, too.

“David’s commitment to running 5k every day in November to raise awareness for men’s mental health, boost Menfulness’ profile, and fundraise for our cause is truly inspiring. We’re with you every step of the way, David.”
