Students in York campaign against changes made by First Bus.
Since the new launch of the #FixFirst campaign by the University of York Student Union last Wednesday, 6000 emails have been sent in opposition to the changes made to bus fares and timetables. The campaign follows months of tension between the student population and the company First Bus, who have increased prices by 4% and reduced options for free student transport.
The Union says it has been “excluded from the consultation process” since March this year, yet First Bus denies this, claiming it had discussed the changes with the Union on “several occasions”. Despite the increase in fares remaining below the rate of inflation, the change to timetables and available buses has resulted in reportedly dangerously large numbers of students waiting at bus stops.
