The City of York Council has approved plans for a statue memorial for a popular duck who went missing from University of York campus last year.

Tall mallard and Indian runner cross, known as Long Boi, stood at 28 inches and lived by Derwent College.

Long Boi became an internet sensation in 2021 following a Reddit post that incorrectly described him as the tallest mallard ever.

After public mentions by former footballer Peter Crouch on Twitter, Greg James on BBC Radio 1 and James Cordon on The Late Late Show, long boy became a York University campus celebrity and informal mascot.

But in early May 2023 it was reported that Long Boi had disappeared and was later presumed dead after being missing for over two months.

Students crowdfunded £5,347 for the memorial, with it being clay mould hand carved by wildlife sculptor Neil Mason, before being shipped to Greece for bronze casting.
