Students in York encouraged to register with a local GP as soon as possible

A new academic year brings with it fresh challenges and opportunities for every student. One of the best ways they can get ready for the year ahead is by registering with a practice close to their term-time address. 

People who live away from home may no longer have easy access to the practice they are registered with. There are a number of surgeries in York available to students, ensuring they can have access to care when they need it. 

Everyone who registers with a practice may be asked to complete a registration form and questionnaire, but should not require proof of ID. 

Dr Nigel Wells, a local GP and Executive Director of Clinical and Professional for NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said: "Starting university is an exciting time for students. Many will be experiencing living away from home for the first time and it is really important that they look after their health. 

"One of the best ways to do that is registering with a local GP, which provides quick access to health services when they are needed. It is especially important for anyone with an ongoing condition, such as diabetes or asthma, or who needs regular prescriptions.

"There are lots of ways to access care in general practice and I encourage everyone to check your practice website for more information." 

Mixing with lots of people from across the country and overseas means that students are at greater risk of catching infectious diseases - including mumps, meningitis and HPV. 

Students should ensure they are protected as soon as possible as illnesses such as these arise at the start of the academic year. More information about NHS vaccinations and when to have them can be found on the NHS website. 

Those who are concerned that they are not up to date with any of the free vaccinations should speak to their GP to request a vaccine. 

Mario Owiriwa, President Wellbeing and Diversity at York St John Students’ Union, said: “Registering with a GP at university is essential for all students, as it ensures timely access to medical care and support, helping them stay healthy and focused on their studies while navigating the demands of university life.” 

York St John University students can register with the Student Health Centre, which is located on campus in Quad East, by completing the online registration form.

University of York students can register with Unity Health, the on-campus GP practice, by completing the online registration form.

Once registered with a GP practice, students can use the NHS App to access a range of key services from the comfort of their accommodation, making it more convenient for them and freeing up frontline staff.

Students can also use the NHS 111 service, making it easier and quicker to get the right advice or treatment they need, whether for their physical or mental health.
