Two Weeks Until the York Minster Fire Exhibition Opens!

The exhibition opens on 29th June, showcasing the events of one of the worst cathedral fires of modern times.

Marking the 40-year anniversary of the York Minster fire, the exhibition will open on 29th June. Named ‘Out of the Ashes’, it will remain open to the public for 12 months.

The Minister was struck by lightning in the early hours of 9 July 1984 causing a huge blaze.

The special programme will be dedicated to remembering the devastation caused and thanking the individuals who helped restore the Minister. There will be a Service of Commemoration on 9 July with a sermon by the Archbishop of York, and sightseeing activities and guided tours will run from 29 June until June 2025, where visitors can learn about the disaster.

Entry is included with a standard admission ticket and entry to the Minster is free for York residents with valid proof of address.
