York and North Yorkshire recently welcomed representatives from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, marking an important step in bolstering the region’s manufacturing economy through international collaboration.

The visiting team from Tokyo, involved in the city's ambitious Three Ring Expressways project, met with representatives from City of York Council, North Yorkshire Council, and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority on Thursday 29th August, at West Offices.

The meeting focused on discussing innovative ideas and technologies related to highway management. The delegation from Tokyo was greeted by the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Margaret Wells, who highlighted the significance of global partnerships in creating smarter and more sustainable cities.

The Tokyo Three Ring Expressways project is a major infrastructure initiative that will invest billions in the development of high-speed ring roads for the Greater Tokyo Area, the world’s largest metropolis.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, expressed his enthusiasm about the visit, stating, “We were thrilled to welcome the Japanese delegation to York today alongside our partners from City of York Council and North Yorkshire Council. These public and private sector partnerships are crucial for unlocking the region’s full potential. This visit is a testament to our growing international recognition for excellence in these sectors. It’s time for York and North Yorkshire to be bold and champion our region’s strengths.”

Tony Corby, Head of Inward Investment and Business Growth at City of York Council, echoed the excitement, saying, "We are delighted that members working on one of the world’s most ambitious urban highway projects chose to visit York. These large-scale infrastructure initiatives present incredible trade opportunities for local businesses developing cutting-edge technologies to make highways safer, more resilient, and sustainable. Our Economic Growth team is here to support businesses looking to expand their global trade links."
