Following the conviction of a York Man for racist gestures, Police have warned against racist behaviour at football matches. The 39-year-old was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison at Leeds Magistrates Court. He pleaded guilty to racially aggravated section 5 public order act offence. This was in relation to gestures he made at a Leeds United vs Aston Villa game in October 2022.
This was filmed and shared on social media and West Yorkshire Police intervened. Detective Sargeant Rob Kennerly said, ‘We hope the sentencing sends a strong message that racism will not be tolerated at football matches or in any other walks of life.’
