York Mystery Plays Supporters Trust commissioned three young Directors to write and produce three new Mystery Plays with the intention of performing them, for one day only, in York. This took place on Saturday June 1 2024.
In a major coup Hartrigg Oaks, an experimental and unique prototype Joseph Rowntree continuing care retirement community, will be the only other place these plays will be performed.
An audience of 150 residents and staff will be privileged to see the three 25 minute long plays, in the Restaurant in the main complex building, on Saturday June 15 at 2.30pm.
This event is just one of a number to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the official opening of Hartrigg Oaks, An afternoon tea for 178 residents and guests was held last April and on Friday August 23 – in another coup – the BBC live broadcast of the radio programme “Any Questions” will take place in front of another 150 person audience.
Hartrigg Oaks comprises 152 bungalows, in a circular setting, with 203 residents living in them. In the centre of the circle is a main building with restaurant, coffee shop, hairdressing salon, craft room, health activity centre (gym), very large library, workshop, etc. There is also the 43 room care home, which also takes in direct entry residents.
Why is Hartrigg Oaks both experimental and unique?
Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust conceived the concept of offering residents, over the age of 60, a guaranteed future concerning their possible or potential care needs into old age. Residents lead independent lives, with many joining in the 50 plus community groups and the activities – like the Mystery Plays. As their care needs increase so does the support they receive, which ramps up automatically. If the need arises they can seamlessly leave their bungalow and take up residence in the care home. The model for funding all of this is what makes Hartrigg Oaks unique in the UK.
