York Saint John University has been awarded Gold in the Hedgehog Friendly Campus scheme. Hedgehogs are currently facing an ecological emergency and are considered vulnerable to extinction in Britain. Hedgehog Friendly Campus is a programme run by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to help halt their decline.
YSJ have been a part of the scheme since 2019 and earned silver status in 2022, but their hard work has now secured their gold. The Grounds and Sustainability teams have led the work with volunteers, which included building hedgehog houses and feeding stations, organising litter picks, and establishing wildflower meadows.
