Pupils from schools across North Yorkshire including York school Hempland Primary School, took part in the Healthy Schools Summer event at RHS Garden Harlow Carr.

Nearly 100 children were given tips for a healthy mind including spending time in nature, eating well and drinking water at a special event celebrating the success of a Healthy Schools awards scheme.

Launched three years ago, the scheme recognises pupils’ efforts to improve their health and well-being.

Schools taking part work towards bronze, silver or gold Healthy School status by meeting criteria across four themes:

•    Active lives

•    Food in schools

•    Emotional health and well-being

•    Personal, social and health education

Assessment for the scheme includes improving school dinners, setting up staff and pupil well-being champions and increasing ways for pupils to be active throughout the school day.

Activities at Harlow Carr included sampling tasty and healthy foods from recipes to use with leftovers, having a go at making fruit kebabs and pedalling on an adapted bike which showed how much energy it takes to power lightbulbs.

The Healthy Schools Award Programme is open to all schools in North Yorkshire and York who can sign up to at no cost.
