As part of Operation Edge Police, the Driving standards Agency and the Council all came together this week and pulled York taxi drivers over for checks which led to fixed penalty notices, repair notices and prohibition notices being issued.
Some taxis were found to have faulty suspension, tyres that were illegal and defects with brakes.
A spokesman for the police said “We were successful in identifying several unroadworthy taxi vehicles which could have caused a serious road traffic collision if they had continued to operate.
